The Facts About Thumb Sucking and Tooth Development

Thumb or finger sucking is a perfectly natural reflex seen in many babies and toddlers. It is a reflex that can provide comfort to babies and, as your child grows, it may help them feel more safe and secure. But when thumb sucking continues beyond the age of five, the sucking motion and pressure can lead to detrimental changes to the mouth and teeth.

Overjet
Teeth that are properly aligned will overlap slightly. Ideally, when the bite is closed, the top teeth should line up with the bottom lip allowing half or two-thirds of the teeth to show.
