What to Do When You Break a Tooth?

From chewing foods to grinding our teeth when we sleep, our teeth get worn down. Over time small sometimes barely visible cracks can appear in our teeth. Despite our best efforts at maintaining proper dental hygiene, those small cracks can lead to a very broken tooth.

As we age, our teeth become weaker. It’s not uncommon for pieces of our teeth to break off — or even break in half — especially if the tooth has had multiple fillings. When your tooth first cracks, you might only really notice it when it starts to bother you, especially when eating or drinking hot or cold foods. But once it finally breaks it can have sharp edges or points that make eating or drinking difficult; pain from exposed nerves, and possible infections.

Does What Toothpaste I Use Matter?

When you walk down the dental care aisle are your local drug store, pharmacy or grocery store, one thing you quickly notice is there are many different brands and types of toothpaste. Some offer added whitening, others help with sensitive teeth, and yet others provide added “anti-cavity” protection.

Deciding which toothpaste you should use depends upon your dental care needs. Some people choose whitening toothpastes to help address issues with staining. However, what they may not realize is these toothpastes can contain abrasive additives to help remove stains. These same additives can also slowly destroy the protective enamel layer of the teeth.
