It is difficult for children, tweens, teens and adults to get into the habit of flossing once daily for better oral health. Many people often wonder whether flossing daily really does anything to help prevent tooth decay. Let’s take a look at some information that shows flossing is actually really helpful and should be a part of your daily oral care habits.
- Flossing removes trapped food particles. When you eat and chew on food, small particles can get stuck in between your teeth. You may have used a toothpick from time to time to unstick a piece of food. However, toothpicks only work at removing the stuck food, not the bacteria that can cause plaque and lead to tooth decay.
- Flossing helps stimulate the gums. The gums need to be stimulated in order to remain healthy and pink looking. If you do not floss, any trapped food particles and plaque can irritate the gums at the base of the teeth. This can lead to an infection in the gum tissue as well as the start of gingivitis, the first stage of periodontal disease.
