Fall is in the air, which means plenty of great-tasting fall treats and snacks. Many of these things are packed full of sugar which is not good for our teeth. Sugar helps feed the bacteria in our mouth which then creates this sticky substance, called plaque.
If the plaque is not removed, it will slowly eat away at the protective enamel layer on the teeth. Once the enamel is gone, tooth decay continues until the tooth is infected and we have a cavity.
Another issue that occurs when plaque is not removed, is it slowly starts to harden and turn into tartar, which is also known as dental calculus. Tartar cannot be removed through normal brushing and flossing.
If you want to avoid having your fall treats and snacks wreck your beautiful smile and create cavities, we recommend using the following tips:
1. Brush your teeth twice a day and floss once a day. Don’t skip your regular dental oral care habits. Sticking to your routine will help keep plaque off of your teeth and reduce the risks of dental decay.
2. Visit your dentist at least twice a year. Your dentist helps remove plaque and tartar to keep your teeth and gums healthy.
3. Limit how many sugary treats and snacks you eat. It is perfectly acceptable to enjoy candy, cookies, and other fall sugary treats and snacks. Just do so in moderation.
4. Eat sugary treats and snacks after a meal. If you eat sugary treats and snacks after lunch or dinner, your mouth is still producing plenty of saliva, which can help reduce how much sugar remains to create plaque.
